There Is No Magic Pill in Electrical Estimating — Stop Looking for One

I hear it constantly. A contractor calls Best Bid and the first question out of their mouth is some version of: “Does your software just do the estimate for me?” Not help them estimate. Do it for them. Completely. Replace the whole process with a button they can push.

I understand it. I really do. Estimating is hard. It takes time — real time. It takes focus. It takes knowledge you have to go out and actually acquire. When you are running a crew, managing three active jobs, handling billing, and trying to bid new work at the same time, the idea of a tool that eliminates the estimating burden entirely sounds like a miracle.

But here is what I know after years in this industry: the shortcut that skips the learning is the same shortcut that puts your company at risk. Every time. Without exception. The contractors who chase the magic pill — the software that estimates for them, the AI that replaces their judgment — are the same contractors who eventually take a bad hit on a job they didn’t understand well enough to protect themselves from.

There is no magic pill. There never was. And the sooner you stop looking for one, the sooner you can start building something real.

Why People Want AI to Do It All

The desire to outsource the entire estimating process to a machine or a software platform does not come from laziness. In most cases, it comes from one of three places — and understanding which one applies to you is the first step toward fixing it.

  • Some contractors want AI to create the estimate for them because they genuinely do not know how to estimate — and they hope technology will fill that gap without requiring them to learn
  • Others believe that buying an estimate is more efficient than learning to produce one — that money can substitute for skill
  • Others have simply been burned by the time cost of manual estimating and are looking for any way out, even if it means handing control to a system they don’t understand

All three of those positions are understandable. None of them are a solution. They are a transfer of risk — away from your knowledge and onto a tool that has no accountability for your outcomes.

Buying Your Way Into an Estimate Is a Dangerous Move

You can hire someone to estimate for you. Best Bid even offers freelance estimating services — and those services exist for good reasons. There are times when outside estimating support is the right call. Complex projects, compressed timelines, capacity constraints — I get it. External support has its place.

But there is a fundamental difference between using external support as a resource and depending on it entirely because you do not understand your own numbers. If you cannot look at an estimate and tell me whether the scope is complete, whether the labor hours are in the right ballpark, or whether the material pricing reflects current market conditions — you do not own your business’s estimating process. Something else does. That is a precarious position to be in.

  • Buying an estimate you cannot evaluate puts your company at the mercy of whoever or whatever produced it
  • If you cannot verify the number, you cannot defend the number — and you cannot fix it when it goes wrong
  • External estimating support is a tool; dependence on it without knowledge is a liability

If You Want Estimating to Be Easy — Learn to Estimate

I know that sounds like the opposite of easy. But it is the truth. The fastest path to easy, efficient estimating is not finding the right software. It is building the skill. Once you understand how to estimate — once you have done enough takeoffs that the process is familiar and the red flags are obvious — the tools make you genuinely fast. Best Bid’s software in the hands of a trained estimator is a powerful thing. The same software in the hands of someone who does not understand the underlying process just makes their mistakes faster and harder to trace.

Knowledge comes first. Tools amplify what you already know. That order matters more than anything else in this business.

Put in the Work

There is no magic pill. There never was. Put in the work, build the skill, and then use software to move faster once you know what you are doing. That is the whole strategy — and it is the only one that actually works.
