Why Estimating Is the Most Important Skill in Your Electrical Business
I use AI every single day. Every day. It helped me figure out a computer issue I had been banging my head against for weeks. It walked me through repairing my lawnmower step by step. I’m not exaggerating — AI saved me real time and real frustration in both of those situations. I am not here to tell you AI is useless. That would be dishonest, and I don’t do dishonest.
But here’s what AI did not do. It did not carry the toolbox out in the heat. It did not get on its knees and turn the screws. It did not put the meter leads on the terminals and read what came back. That was me. I still had to know what I was doing. I still had to do the work. AI gave me directions. I was still the one driving.
That distinction matters more than most people realize. A tool — any tool, whether it’s AI, software, or a seasoned estimator on your payroll — is only as effective as the person using it. If you don’t understand what the tool is doing, you can’t catch it when it’s wrong. And in electrical estimating, wrong costs you.
That is exactly why estimating is the most important skill in your electrical business. Not because you have to do it all yourself. But because you have to own it.
Estimating Is How You Win Work
You cannot run an electrical business without knowing how to estimate. Full stop. Every job you win or lose starts with a number. That number is the foundation. If it’s wrong, everything built on top of it is wrong — your crew schedule, your material orders, your profit margin. Everything.
Estimating is not a back-office task you hand off and forget about. It is a core business skill. It is how you price your work, how you compete in the market, and how you decide whether a job is even worth bidding. Contractors who treat estimating as a checkbox to get through are the same contractors who wonder where their money went at the end of the year.
- You must estimate to win work — there is no way around it
- Estimating is a core business skill, not a clerical task
- Every downstream decision depends on the accuracy of your estimate
- Delegating estimating blindly is not the same as managing estimating strategically
Knowing Enough to Know If Something Is Wrong
Here’s where I see contractors get into real trouble. They rely on a team member, a software program, or a freelance estimator — and then they just trust the number. They don’t look at it. They don’t question it. They just send it out.
You don’t have to be the one doing every count. But you absolutely have to know enough to recognize when the number is off. If your estimator brings you a bid that says a 10,000 square foot commercial build-out needs 45 hours of labor, you need to know that number is wrong. If you don’t have enough knowledge to catch that, you’re not in the driver’s seat. You’re just a passenger hoping the driver knows the road.
- Oversight of your estimates is your responsibility, not your estimator’s
- You should never send a number you haven’t looked at with your own eyes
- Recognize the red flags: numbers that are too low, scopes that seem incomplete, labor hours that don’t match the job size
- Accountability stops with you — the name on the business
Estimating Is Learnable — So Learn It
The good news is that estimating is not a mysterious talent some people are born with. It is a skill. Skills are learned. Anyone willing to put in the time and the effort can become a confident, accurate estimator. That is not a motivational poster — it’s the truth.
Best Bid exists to give electrical contractors both the tools and the knowledge to estimate well. The software makes the process faster and more organized. The training makes the process trustworthy. You need both. Software without knowledge just speeds up your mistakes. Knowledge without software slows you down unnecessarily. Together, they make you dangerous — in the best possible way.
