“AI!…Huh!…Good God, y’all…What is it good for?”

If you’re old enough, you probably recognize that famous line from Edwin Starr’s classic song War.

When people ask me about Artificial Intelligence, I can’t help but think about that song.

Some people believe AI will completely replace electrical estimators.

Others believe it is nothing more than another marketing gimmick.

After spending more than 50 years in the electrical industry, I believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

I use AI almost every day.

Recently AI helped me solve a computer problem that had frustrated me for weeks. It also helped me diagnose a problem on my lawn mower that refused to start.

Did AI fix my computer?

No.

Did AI replace the bad part?

No.

Did AI walk into my shop with a toolbox, crawl around on the floor, read the voltmeter, loosen bolts, or turn a wrench?

Absolutely not.

AI gave me ideas.

AI helped me think.

I still had to do the work.

That is exactly where AI belongs in electrical estimating.


Why Everyone Wants AI to Estimate for Them

Every software company today seems to promise the same thing.

“Push a button and let AI estimate your project.”

That sounds wonderful.

Unfortunately, electrical estimating doesn’t work that way.

People want AI because they believe it will:

  • Count every symbol automatically.
  • Measure every conduit run.
  • Build a complete estimate.
  • Produce the perfect bid.
  • Save hours of work.

The problem is this…

Estimating isn’t just counting.

Estimating is making decisions.

Those decisions determine whether you make money—or lose money.

No software, no matter how intelligent, understands your company the way you do.

It doesn’t know your crews.

It doesn’t know whether you’re working with apprentices or master electricians.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned over my career is that success usually comes from balance.

Many people want software because they don’t want to learn estimating.

That is backwards.

Software should speed up what you already understand.

Imagine hiring someone who cannot read blueprints but owns the world’s best estimating software.

Would you trust their bid?

Neither would I.

You need to understand:

  • Labor
  • Material
  • Difficulty
  • Installation methods
  • NEC requirements
  • Crew productivity
  • Risk
  • Material handling

before you allow software to help you.

Learning estimating is never wasted knowledge.

Understanding Auto Count Technology

Auto Count has improved tremendously over the past several years.

At Best Bid, we have spent years developing and improving our own hybrid Auto Count technology.

Many competitors rely on one of two basic approaches.

The first searches for symbols that look exactly alike.

Vector Drawings vs. Scanned Drawings

One of the biggest misunderstandings in our industry is the difference between vector drawings and scanned drawings.

Vector drawings contain mathematical information.

Scanned drawings contain pictures.

That difference is enormous.

Vector drawings allow software to identify lines, circles, symbols, and text with incredible precision.

Scanned drawings are simply millions of colored pixels.

When contractors tell me,

“The drawing looks great on my screen.”

that tells me absolutely nothing.

Many beautiful drawings are terrible for automatic counting.

Before running Auto Count, always perform two simple tests.

Zoom in extremely close.

If the lines stay perfectly sharp…

Doing these things will dramatically improve your accuracy.


My Personal Experience After Testing AI

I’ve spent years testing AI.

I’ve tested nearly every major automatic counting approach available.

Some are impressive.

Some are disappointing.

Some fail completely.
