Why Verification Is More Important Than Recognition in AI Estimating
I hear a lot of excitement when contractors talk about AI auto-count. The idea sounds simple: upload the drawings, let artificial intelligence find the devices, and receive a finished count.
That sounds like the future. In many ways, it is.
But there is one question that is often overlooked. After the software finishes counting, how do you know the answer is correct?
That question is more important than how fast the software counted.
After spending years in electrical estimating and testing different approaches to automation, I have learned one thing: recognition is impressive, but verification is what protects the estimate.
A number on a screen does not win a job. A profitable, accurate proposal wins a job.
Finding a Symbol Is Not the Same as Understanding a Project
An estimator does much more than count items on a drawing. A professional estimator understands how the project will be built, what problems may occur, and where costs can get out of control.
AI can locate patterns. It can identify many symbols. It can save time. But it does not know the history behind the project, the habits of the engineer, or the installation challenges that experience reveals.
This is why verification remains such an important part of the process.
Why Contractors Should Care About Verification
A missed device may only represent a small material cost, but the bigger problem is the confidence you have in the entire estimate.
If you cannot trust the count, you cannot trust the labor. If you cannot trust the labor, you cannot trust the proposal.
The goal of technology should be increasing confidence, not simply increasing speed.
- Can I quickly see what the software counted?
- Can I identify what may have been missed?
- Can I compare the results against my own experience?
- Can I make corrections before submitting the bid?
The Future of AI Estimating
I believe AI will continue to improve. The technology today is already changing the way estimators work.
But the companies that benefit the most will not be the ones that simply turn everything over to AI. They will be the companies that combine better technology with experienced estimators.
The estimator of the future will not be replaced by AI. The estimator who knows how to use AI will have an advantage over the estimator who does not.
