Why Good Electrical Estimators Still Matter in an AI World

I have watched a lot of changes in electrical estimating during my career. I started when estimates were created with pencils, paper, and a calculator. Today we have powerful computers, digital takeoff, databases, and now artificial intelligence.

Every time a new technology arrives, someone asks the same question: “Will this replace the estimator?”

I heard that question when computers entered the estimating world. I heard it when estimating software became more powerful. I hear it today with AI.

My answer has always been the same. Technology does not replace great estimators. It makes great estimators more valuable.

The difference is understanding what technology can do and what still requires experience.

Estimating Has Never Been Just About Counting

One of the biggest misunderstandings about electrical estimating is believing that the job is simply finding how many devices are on a drawing and applying a price.

Counting is important, but it is only the beginning.

A great estimator understands labor, productivity, installation difficulty, specifications, engineering habits, material choices, schedule requirements, and risk.

Two estimators can look at the same drawings and come up with different numbers because one understands the hidden challenges that the other does not see.

Experience Creates Judgment

This is where experience becomes valuable. Software can process information quickly, but experience helps determine what information matters.

An experienced estimator knows when something looks unusual. They know when a drawing detail may create extra labor. They know when a specification could change the cost of a project.

That knowledge is not created by clicking a button. It comes from years of seeing what happens after the bid is won.

Technology Gives Good Estimators More Power

I believe the future belongs to estimators who combine experience with technology.

The estimator who ignores technology will eventually fall behind. The estimator who depends completely on technology will also struggle.

The advantage comes from using software and AI as tools while keeping the decision-making ability of an experienced professional.

  • Use technology to reduce repetitive work.
  • Use automation to find information faster.
  • Use software to organize and verify your estimate.
  • Use experience to make the final decisions.

The Estimator Is Still Responsible

At the end of the day, the proposal still goes out under the contractor’s name.

If the estimate is wrong, the software company does not install the project. The contractor does.

That is why the best estimating companies do not remove the estimator from the process. They give the estimator better tools to make better decisions.

What I Believe the Future Looks Like

I believe AI will become a normal part of electrical estimating. It will help find information, organize data, and speed up many tasks.

But the companies that succeed will be the ones that understand something important: technology can provide information, but people provide judgment.

The best estimator of the future will not be the person who knows the most about AI. It will be the person who knows how to combine AI with years of estimating knowledge.
